Check Engine Light Diagnostics and Repair in San Leandro
At Doral’s – the premier San Leandro auto repair shop – we can provide full check engine light diagnostics and repairs. Our nationally ASE certified technicians have the latest digital equipment and up to date training to professionally diagnose and repair problems indicated by the check engine light (CEL). Depending on the make and model, the check engine light can appear as “check engine” or “service engine soon”, an icon of an engine with the word “check”, or just and icon of an engine. If any of those appear on your dashboard, your car’s computer just illuminated the infamous “check engine” light.
What to do when the Check Engine Light comes on?
Each situation is different, but there are some rules of thumb that can be helpful:
- If the check engine light is blinking or flashing on-and-off, stop the car as soon as it is safe to do so, and turn off the engine. Have the vehicle towed to an auto repair shop. Driving with check engine light flashing can cause damage to the engine or other components.
- If the check engine light is illuminated, but steady (not blinking or flashing on-and-off) you can usually continue driving the car but should get it to a professional auto repair shop as soon as possible.
What does Check Engine Light mean?
There are literally hundreds of conditions that could cause the check engine light to be illuminated. They can range from benign, to major problems.
There is one check you can perform at home, before going to an auto repair shop – check that the gas cap fits tight. Yes, an old or incorrectly closed gas cap is a pretty frequent cause of a check engine light. If gas cap is not the cause, the progression of problems goes pretty quickly towards complex and expensive – on the low end, it could be spark plugs, but it also could be any of hundreds of other conditions, including serious engine problems or problems with the catalytic converter.
Once you eliminated gas cap as the culprit, it’s time to ask professionals for help. While you could buy a scanner on Amazon and scan you car’s computer, all you will get is a bunch of codes. You can look them up on the internet, but at this point, you will still have to go to an auto repair shop to get it professionally diagnosed and fixed.
Did you notice we said “get it diagnosed”? The codes are like the road signs – they point you in a direction, but rarely give a full answer. That’s why a professional technician will hook up his or her professional scanner (which can cost as much as $10,000 and do a lot more than the $49 toy that people buy on Amazon). Based on the information obtained, and his years of training and experience, the technician will proceed to diagnose the root cause of the problem. Once they discover the cause of the check engine light, they will let you know what repairs will need to be done.
So if your car has a check engine light on, give us a call to set up an appointment. Our nationally ASE certified technicians will diagnose your vehicle, and let you know what repairs need to be done. Driving with the check engine light on can lead to expensive repairs – so if it is on, give us a call and we will take good care of your vehicle.
