Most automakers, including Ford, GM, Honda and Stellantis are writing off billions of dollars (close to $50 billion combined) because of their less-than-stellar electric vehicles sales. They invested billions in the electric car production, designs, battery supplies, and marketing, only to see sales that did not justify the expense.

During that time, Toyota continued to improve its hybrid systems, while producing only one electric vehicle model: Toyota bZ4X. This weird name combined with a rather cautious marketing effort indicated Toyota’s reluctance to jump into the electric vehicle fight.

But all this changes now. While the other big automakers are writing off billions and billions of dollars, Toyota just announced new electric vehicle models – while others are licking their wounds, Toyota, at first reluctant, now is charging ahead.

2026 bZ Woodland with front and rear electric motors and increased ground clearance is already available in the US, along with its older sibling, Toyota bZ (a new-and-improved version of the bZ4X). Toyota C-HR EV, and all-electric compact SUV is showing up at the dealers in March 2026. By 2027 we will also be able to buy Toyota Highlander EV. So while the other big car makers are trying to figure out what to do next, Toyota is pushing forward, filling the vacuum. By 2030 Toyota plans to be selling fully electric versions of Camry, Tacoma and Tundra as well.
